KEPLER: 1609 AD
The German astronomer Johannes Kepler advanced
the work of Copernicus, declaring in his "Astronomia
Nova" (1609) that the planets move around the sun in
elliptical orbits which he mathematically defined in
this work and in his later work, "Harmonices Mundi"
(Harmonies of the World) which was published in 1619.
By abandoning the idea that the planets moved in
perfect circles (not elipses), Kepler created a model
of the solar system which was consistent with the
relatively accurate planetary observations of his
era.
